Spirulina is a blue-green algae grown in fresh water around the world, usually cultivated under an abundance of sunlight. It is known for its high plant-based protein content, offering ALL of the essential amino acids. 3 tablespoons of spirulina is equivalent to the protein content of 2 eggs! It contains a high amount of vitamins and minerals, as well as essential fatty acids such as gamma linoleic acid. It binds itself to toxins in the body to help with detoxification and some smaller studies have shown that it boosts and supports the immune system.
Mind the ocean-like flavour, spirulina is a go-to in our house for that afternoon pick me up, supplying some good energy and optimal nourishment. Pair it with antioxidant-packed blueberries and some healthy fats from nuts and seeds for a smoothie that packs a punch!
Makes: 2.5 cups (1 serving)
*If you don’t have frozen, no sweat! Add a few ice cubes to your blender.

Try adding it to a veggie wrap for lunch, or top your burger with some green powered hummus at your next barbecue. This recipe adds some greens to the mix thanks to the spirulina powder.
