You have seen "natural flavours" listed as an ingredient in health products and pondered what that means. You may have considered it an umbrella term for flavours, you may have heard things (good or bad), or you may have wondered if it's natural at all.
Well, rest assured, it is a true ingredient, and we do not want you to be wondering any longer.
Natural flavours are aromatic and flavorful compounds that are derived from natural sources.
Yes, actual natural sources.
It is called natural because the components are extracted from ingredients that exist in nature.
The composition of a natural flavour is usually proprietary as it is formulated with several ingredients and can differ from product to product. It does not mean just one extract or coming from just one item. It is a specific combination of extracts that come together to give off a desired aroma and taste.
For example, a ‘natural’ strawberry flavor is not necessarily going to include strawberry but a combination of compounds that deliver the same sensation.
At Organika, we use natural flavours, as needed, to improve the taste of a product or enhance the experience for consumers. Some examples of natural flavours include fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, plant material (bark, bud, root, leaf), herbs, etc.
Please note: “Natural flavours” are very different from “artificial flavours.” An artificial flavour is derived from chemical reactions, so there is an alteration of the components to get a desired taste.
All Organika products are non-gmo, do not use artificial flavours, colours, sweeteners or preservatives. You can rest assured that you are not consuming harmful additives in your Organika products. We are your natural solution for all things living healthily.
When manufacturing or creating one of our wellness products, there is thorough testing done through third party to check for all allergens and ingredients.
Some common allergens include the following: milk, eggs, fish/shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soy, and sesame seeds.
If a product contains any allergens in any of the ingredients (which includes natural flavours), we will include it in the allergen/caution information on the label of the product.
Please note: If you have other allergies or food sensitivities beyond the common list of allergies (as listed by Health Canada), it is best to take caution and research it further before consuming.
Now that you know a bit more about natural flavours, and that they do indeed come from actual naturally occurring compounds, we hope you can enjoy your wellness products with a bit more assurance.

Marine Collagen: Beauty from the Sea You may be seeing marine collagen or hearing about it, but unsure what the difference between that and bovine collagen is, and/or which one you should be consuming. As expected, Marine collagen comes from fish and is rich in Type 1 collagen. The collagen from this source is pescatarian-friendly for those that do not consume bovine (which also has Type 1 collagen). However, there seems to be an ongoing debate over what is the best source of collagen and why some may opt for a marine source. We are diving into all things marine collagen and answering all your questions about it. Where does marine collagen come from? As the name implies, marine collagen comes from the sea – derived from fish scales, bones, and skin. Organika's Marine Collagen powder is sourced from Canada! It comes from the scales of wild-caught cod, pollock and haddock from the North Atlantic. What is marine collagen used for? What are the known benefits? Collagen, in general, is used to help with skin health (specifically with aging skin, wrinkles), stronger hair and nails, as well as promoting joint health. Rich in Type 1 collagen, marine collagen is linked with beauty benefits and tissue repair. Some of the most popular benefits of marine collagen include: Rejuvenated skin Improved skin texture and hydration Fuller and smoother hair Stronger nails Faster-growing hair and nails Reduced cellulite Why do some people prefer marine collagen? Some may consider marine collagen a more sustainable alternative. The fishing industry often has a lot of unused raw materials from the fish they catch, including the fish skins where marine collagen comes from. In that case, marine collagen can be a more comfortable choice as it may seem to offer a more economical and environmentally friendly option for various companies. Consumers may like to see that instead of wasting fish skins, companies can use the excess materials to create other products. Is marine collagen better than bovine collagen? This is the million-dollar question consumers are asking. The truth: although they come from different sources, fundamentally, the type of collagen from both sources is the same. Collagen is a large molecule, so for it to be efficiently absorbed and utilized by the body, it must first be broken down into smaller pieces, which you may have heard of as collagen peptides. Furthermore it must go through a process known as hydrolyzation: natural enzymes break down collagen into the smaller collagen peptides, without the use of heat or chemicals. High bioavailability in a collagen supplement is assured by the size of its peptide molecules, known as the molecular weight. The smaller the molecular weight, the easier it is for collagen peptides to reach the blood stream and be effectively used in the body. Both Organika’s marine and bovine collagen go through these processes for high bioavailability and ease of digestion. The nitty gritty: marine collagen naturally boasts a lower average molecular weight than any other collagen source - Organika's weighs in at an impressively low 2-2.5 kDa, compared to an average 40-45 kDa in most bovine collagens. However, bovine collagen can have a molecular weight comparable to that of marine collagen - all it takes is more rounds of hydrolization. This is how we achieve a molecular size of under 3 kDa for our bovine-sourced Enhanced Collagen Original! So essentially, what it comes down to is personal preference and dietary restrictions. It can also be beneficial to combine a variety of collagen supplements (bovine, bone broth, marine and even poultry-sourced collagen) for optimal health. Want options for Marine collagen? There is something for everyone – whether you prefer powder, capsules, liquid, or a water enhancer – there is a collagen option for you. Marine Collagen PowderHigh in type 1 collagen, which is essential for maintaining skin, hair and nail health. Hydrolyzed for easy digestion, our marine collagen powder is also tasteless, easily mixing into beverages or foods. Salmon Collagen Capsules Convenient capsules more your thing? Try our Salmon Collagen Capsules. Because they're higher in omega-3 fatty acids, in addition to beauty health you get support with joint pain associated with osteoarthritis. Note: some people prefer salmon capsules for marine collagen because of the omega-3s that have added skin and arthritis benefits. Liquid Marine Collagen If you prefer liquid or flavoured (with orange), you must try this beauty elixir. Made with marine collagen, 200 mg Vitamin C, and 500 mcg biotin, you are getting the ultimate beauty benefits. Effervess A convenient source of marine collagen and vitamin C in a fizzy tablet that will give your water (and your skin) a makeover. Enjoy a variety of flavours: Kiwi, Cranberry, Rose, Lavender and Honey Peach The contents of this article have been fact-checked and reviewed by Registered Holistic Nutritionists.

Meet ‘Denny’ & his skin health hack Meet Fransiscus Denny, Director of the Innovation Team at Organika Health. After studying Biotechnology, Denny became enamoured with living healthy. He focuses special attention to longevity, staying active, and ensuring he knows what he is putting into his body for optimal health and wellness. Denny is obsessed with clinical studies, biochemical pathways and how molecules work within our body. Creating the products here at Organika, is a perfect role for this supplement genius. Not only is he behind some of the best health products to hit the Canadian market, he's sharing some of his “health hacks” with you! Denny’s hack: Denny combines Hyaluronic Acid Powder with Electrolytes + Enhanced Collagen into his water daily. He wants to maximize anti-aging, skin health and joint health; he also loves this as a low-sugar option for a tasty afternoon drink. Let’s dive in... What is hyaluronic acid? Let’s back up and discuss this amazing molecule. Hyaluronic acid (HA) naturally occurs in the body, in our connective tissues, neural tissues (brain and nerves), epithelial tissues (our skin), and our cells. This molecule can retain up to 1000 times its weight in water. Considering that we are mainly made up of water, HA helps to attract and maintain water throughout the body. This is especially important for hydration and any function that needs water... such as glowing healthy skin plus a healthy body overall. Electrolytes + Enhanced Collagen goes well with Hyaluronic Acid Electrolytes enhance hydration (think important nutrients that you need to replenish when sweating, sick or dehydrated). Our Electrolytes + Enhanced Collagen (EEC) was created to offer people a replacement for pop or sugary sports drinks. The addition of collagen helps a catalyst reaction to help with building blocks for recovery. The collagen helps with connective tissues, while electrolytes help replenish lost nutrients during sweat and activities. Coupling this with Hyaluronic Acid just makes sense. HA and collagen complement and support each other – it's like a perfect marriage. We know now that HA supports all the tissues in the body, while collagen increases and complements all their functions. Learn more! We asked Denny some key questions around his HA + EEC hack. Why is consuming HA better than topical? HA is a carbohydrate molecule that creates buoyancy in the plasma cell in various tissues (as we mentioned above). Our skin consists of layers with the oldest layer facing the outside (which will be shed first). Ingesting HA means we are providing the building blocks to all those tissues in our body from the inside out, so the inner layers are more buoyant. HA is a polymer, well suited for ingestion. The particle itself is difficult to penetrate cell layers due to its size. Therefore, consuming HA is a great idea. When should people consume HA and what is the main benefit? HA is a macronutrient, and there are multiple health benefits. In addition to the skin health described already, your joint health is helped, allowing you to feel more young and agile. The main benefit is supporting cellular HA levels in our cells, to continually have healthier skin, joints and ligaments. As such, routine consumption is more beneficial than ad-hoc consumption (taken occasionally). Should people take both HA and EEC together? Yes. HA and Collagen are both present in connective tissue, but they work differently. Collagen is a helix protein structure that acts as a coil while HA is polysaccharide that feeds the plasma creating buoyancy. Combining these provides a more rounded benefit to your skin and joints. If you are seeking longevity – this is a game-changer. It’s also why we created Enhanced Collagen Pure Beauty (with the addition of more beauty ingredients), for those that want a non-flavoured and not-fizzy option. What makes the HA and EEC at Organika stand apart? We are using HA with specific molecular weight that is clinically studied. Our HA is also clinically studied to have better absorption than other types of HA, which means you get the most out of your supplementation. Our Electrolytes + Enhanced Collagen uses our premium Hydrolyzed Bovine Collagen peptides, derived from grass-fed bovine. This means our collagen is highly bioavailable, easily digested and absorbed. Do you have recommendations or recipes for taking both together? Mix both powder mixes before adding water. Add water, let them fizz and enjoy! “Side effects include enhanced confidence! Watch out!” Fransiscus Denny, Director of Innovation Team, Organika Health
read moreThe best supplements for travel or when on-the-go this summer Say no to exhaustion, illness and traveler's tummy with our healthy travel tips. Travelling is an incredible experience, so you want to make sure you’re staying as healthy as possible so you can enjoy it all. That means kicking the jetlag, avoiding sickness, and steering very clear of traveler's tummy. Don’t panic. We’ve got your back. Here are our top healthy travel tips for you. Take Immune-boosting supplements Whether during travel, or at your destination, your immune system has its work cut out for it. Making an effort to boost your immunity before flying is so important. It can help you avoid the bugs that like to hang out with you during your trip. 70% of your immune system is in your digestive tract. It hosts trillions of bacteria, also referred to as gut flora. That gut flora is made up of good bacteria, bad bacteria, and yeast. When everything is in balance, the good bacteria keep the bad guys in check and the yeast under control for optimal digestive health and immunity. So if gut flora matters so much when it comes to immunity, probiotics should be at the top of your list. Probiotics are good bacteria that live in your digestive tract and a few other places. They help support the good guys and promote a healthily balanced gut flora, and overall intestinal health. What we recommend: Try our Probiotic + Prebiotic Powder, available in convenient sachets. Take it daily prior to travel and pack in your carryon to use during your trip as well. Vitamin C and immune-boosters are also key. Try taking our Instant C Effervescent tablets to give your system a powerful dose of this super antioxidant which works to remove pathogens and germs in your body. Add vitamin D and zinc for extra immune protection with our Instant C, D, Zinc Immunity Effervescent. Beat the jetlag Travelling across time zones leaves you feeling upside down when it comes to day and night. The goal is to avoid sleeping away the day and stirring all hours of the night so you can actually get out and enjoy your trip. For kicking jetlag, there’s L-Theanine and Magnesium. L-Theanine and Magnesium Bisglycinate can help reduce the time it takes to fall asleep, so you can sleep longer. It also prevents the daytime fatigue and sleep disturbances that can come with jetlag leaving more time for you to explore your new destination. For falling asleep, melatonin is a natural sleep aid that can enhance drowsiness to actually fall asleep. Another sleep support supplement is Gaba which enhances the duration and quality of sleep. What we recommend: Enhanced Collagen Relax to help take the edge off and de-stress without drowsiness. Also enjoy the benefits of collagen at the same time. Enhanced Collagen Sleep, with Gaba and Melatonin, to induce a deep sleep at night. Note: one of the benefits of regular use of collagen is gut health. Getting sick on your trip Sometimes no matter how hard you try to prevent it; you still get sick. That’s why always packing something to help fight a cold is key. Our top pick for killing the cold when travelling is Bee Propolis. Bee Propolis is a supplement that’s great for when you’re feeling under the weather. It has anti-microbial properties that help to relieve sore throats and infections. What we recommend: Bee Propolis comes as a spray, tincture, or capsules, so it’s super easy to use anywhere you go. Avoid Traveller's Tummy So you’ve kicked the jetlag, and you’ve crushed the cold and you’re almost home free on having the best trip of your life. There’s just one more bullet to dodge. The most dreaded traveler’s tummy. Traveller’s tummy can include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting, all of which can ruin a vacation. Avoiding traveler’s tummy means being proactive about the foods you eat and the water you drink while you’re away. Use these tips to help you avoid traveller’s tummy in regions where water and food purity may be an issue: Drink bottled water and brush your teeth with it too! Always choose cooked foods over raw foods! – raw foods can often be rinsed with contaminated water, and cooking helps kill bacteria Order “no ice” – avoid drinking beverages that contain ice cubes likely made from tap water Choose fruit you can peel, so only your clean hands come into contact with the parts you eat What we recommend: Digest Relief helps to alleviate digestive upset including lack of appetite, nausea and indigestion and conveniently available in capsule form. Full Spectrum Plant Enzymes helps the body to digest and metabolize carbohydrates, fats and protein. This is great for when you are eating foods you don’t normally eat. Transporting your supplements for travel Supplements are best kept in cool a dry place to maintain the integrity of the capsule shell and the potency of the product. When you’re travelling, this isn’t always easy. Do your best to store them in a shaded cool area in the place that you’re staying to avoid direct sunlight. Non-transparent containers are best. When it comes to probiotics, the best probiotics for travel are shelf stable varieties that can withstand storage outside of the fridge for long periods of time. Don’t panic if your supplements feel slightly warm at times in travel, short-term exposure to heat and humidity should not dramatically affect the quality of products, so it’s still beneficial to use them. So there you have it! You’re set to be restful, build your immunity, or supporting your tummy and gut health. Go pack your bags, and enjoy your trip!
